A Guardian ad Litem is an attorney appointed by the court to fulfill an independent statutory role. The GAL investigates relevant facts, evaluates the individual’s best interests, and provides advocacy and recommendations to the court. The exact duties depend on the proceeding and the appointment order.
This work involves objective factual investigation and careful review of the circumstances affecting a child or vulnerable adult. A GAL’s best-interest recommendation informs the court; the judge makes the decision. A GAL is not a parent’s personal attorney or a substitute for an appointed guardian.

Court Appointments
Patrick accepts assignments directly through Wisconsin circuit court judges or family court commissioners, subject to the applicable appointment procedures, eligibility requirements, and conflict review.

Party Stipulations
Parents or their attorneys may mutually nominate Patrick when they need a seasoned, detail-oriented professional. An agreed nomination remains subject to court approval and a formal appointment; private agreement alone does not create GAL authority.
